Snapshot 15–21 July 2015

Iraq: More than 74,440 people have been displaced from Saqlawiyah in Falluja district since 8 July, and tens of thousands reportedly remain trapped in Falluja and Ramadi districts. There are now more than 3.1 million IDPs across 3,613 locations in Iraq; 300,000 people have been displaced from and within Anbar since military operations began in April.

CHINA

Typhoon Chan-Hom made landfall early on 11 Jul in Zhujiajian Township in the island city of Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, as a category 1 typhoon before being downgraded to a tropical storm on 12 Jul. Chan-Hom is decreasing intensity as it moves northeast. Some 1.9 million people in nine cities were affected by the storm, including more than 1.1 million evacuated as a precaution. No casualties are reported.

  • 800 people remain displaced in South Cotobato and Sultan Kudarat, in the southern Philippines, due to floods caused by heavy rains over 24-25 June.

  • Over 1 900 hectares of agricultural farms have been damaged.

  • The Province of Sultan Kudarat declared a state of calamity.

  • The heavy rainfall is also seriously affecting the more than 30 000 people still displaced since the outbreak of fighting in February 2015 in Maguindanao. Most of them continue to live in makeshift shelters and tents.

  • Heavy rain reportedly affected Mindanao (southern Philippines) over 24-25 June causing floods and landslides.

  • According to media (as of 25 June) three people have died, more than 800 have been displaced and thousands have been affected in the provinces of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.

  • Over the next 24 h light to moderate rain and thunderstorm may affect some areas of central and southern Philippines.

NIGERIA - Violence
• Boko Haram's hit-and-run capability remains intact, despite advances by the Nigerian and Chadian armed forces. This week, Boko Haram insurgents killed 42 people in two villages of Borno State. A 12 year girl wearing a suicide bomb vest struck in Yobe, killing 10 people and injuring 30 others.
• Further displacement is ongoing in the North-East (already existing 1.5 million displaced people). Increased humanitarian assistance is needed.
