11 février 2016 – L'année 2015, la plus chaude jamais enregistrée, confirme que les catastrophes liées aux conditions météorologiques et climatiques dominent désormais les tendances des catastrophes induites par les aléas naturels, selon une nouvelle analyse présentée jeudi par le Bureau des Nations Unies pour la réduction des risques de catastrophe (UNISDR).

Les cinq pays les plus touchés par les catastrophes en 2015 ont été la Chine (26), les États-Unis (22), l'Inde (19), les Philippines (15) et l'Indonésie (11), précise cette analyse.

The Bahamas, Bermuda - Tropical Cyclone JOAQUIN
• Hurricane JOAQUIN is moving off the coast of Bermuda, as a Category 1 Hurricane. Previously it affected several Caribbean islands with heavy rains and winds, causing floods in the Bahamas and killing one person in Haiti.
• Over the next 24 h it is forecast to move north-east over the Atlantic Ocean, away from Bermuda, weakening.

Yemen: The health system in Taizz governorate is close to collapse. All public hospitals have closed, and the remaining health facilities are overwhelmed by severely injured people as well as a dengue outbreak. Access remains severely restricted across the country. Hudaydah port, the main entry point for humanitarian supplies in north and central Yemen, remains closed, and road transport from Aden port to northern governorates remains limited.

Papua New Guinea: 1.8 million people have been affected by prolonged dry spell and frost in the Highlands region; 1.3 million are reported to be most at risk. Crops have been destroyed, and several chools and health facilities have been closed due to water shortages. The affected population is reported to be resorting to less reliable sources of drinking water.

CHINA

Typhoon Chan-Hom made landfall early on 11 Jul in Zhujiajian Township in the island city of Zhoushan, Zhejiang Province, as a category 1 typhoon before being downgraded to a tropical storm on 12 Jul. Chan-Hom is decreasing intensity as it moves northeast. Some 1.9 million people in nine cities were affected by the storm, including more than 1.1 million evacuated as a precaution. No casualties are reported.

Syria: Civilian deaths made up 81% of the total death toll in June, which was 2,137, bringing the total number of people killed so far in 2015 to 11,000. 705,000 people have been displaced in the first five months of this year: 439,000 were internally displaced, and the vast majority of the rest fled to Turkey.

INDIA

Heavy rainfall across West Bengal caused landslides killing an estimated 40 people with many still missing.
Continuing rainfall is impeding relief efforts as the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) attempts to carry out rescue efforts.
There is a shortage of food and safe drinking water in the affected areas.

The NDRF is working alongside national disaster teams at the landslide sites. Heavy rainfall is expected to continue up to 9 Jul.

NIGERIA - Violence
• Boko Haram's hit-and-run capability remains intact, despite advances by the Nigerian and Chadian armed forces. This week, Boko Haram insurgents killed 42 people in two villages of Borno State. A 12 year girl wearing a suicide bomb vest struck in Yobe, killing 10 people and injuring 30 others.
• Further displacement is ongoing in the North-East (already existing 1.5 million displaced people). Increased humanitarian assistance is needed.
