  • According to the Humanitarian Requirement Document released in March, 2.9 million people in Ethiopia require emergency food assistance in 2015.

  • The food security situation has stabilized in most parts of the country in January 2015 with the completion of the Meher harvest season (November – January).

Iraq: Violence, looting and serious human rights violations were reported as Iraqi forces and affiliated groups recaptured Tikrit. There are numerous booby traps and tensions are reportedly rising between government forces and militias. Elsewhere, IDPs are returning: tens of thousands have gone home to Diyala, Ninewa and Al Alam in Salah al Din since February.

Ukraine: Fears are growing of a new offensive in Mariupol, as non-government troops appear to be gathering nearby. A recent assessment has found that more than 1.6 million people need humanitarian assistance, nearly 1.1 million of whom are in non-government-controlled areas. 20–30% of IDPs are at risk of losing their status and benefits, due to a new mechanism to verify the addresses of IDPs.

Vanuatu: 24 people are confirmed dead so far after Tropical Cyclone Pam hit on 13 March. Shefa, Tafea, Malampa, and Penama are among the worst affected provinces. Access challenges are significant.

Cameroon: The number of people internally displaced in the north has almost doubled since 10 February, to 117,000. This brings the number of displaced in Cameroon to an estimated 412,700, including 66,000 fleeing Boko Haram violence in Nigeria and the rest from the Central African Republic.

Iraq: 26,000 people have fled fighting between Islamic State and Iraqi security forces in Tikrit for Samarra. Food, shelter, health and WASH needs are priorities. More than 100 families have arrived in Al Dour, located between Tikrit and Samarra, and thousands have fled to central and southern governorates.

South Sudan: Heavy fighting between government and opposition was reported in Upper Nile state, and government troops took control of Wadakona town. Many civilians are reported trapped. Peace talks have collapsed.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Following the overall near normal performance of the 2014 kiremt rains, food security is expected to improve in many parts of the country. Nevertheless, humanitarian challenges will continue in pocket areas in the northeastern and southeastern parts of the country where the seasonal rainfall performance was poor. Moreover, food security will likely continue to deteriorate in areas affected by various hazards during the latter half of 2014.

Afghanistan: Heavy snowfall has caused avalanches in northern, central and eastern Afghanistan; 280 people have died. Panshir province is most affected. Communication lines have been disrupted in places, power supplies to Kabul have been cut. Priority needs are for NFIs and emergency shelter; access to isolated areas is difficult.

Myanmar: Fighting between the Myanmar army and the MNDAA, an insurgent group in the Kokang area of Shan state, displaced tens of thousands of people. Some fled into central Myanmar, while between 30,000 and 50,000 are thought to have crossed into Nansan, Yunnan province, China.

Resistance to the response remains high in Forecariah, worst affected by the outbreak; though ten prefectures have reported at least one incident of resistance.   • The Government and partners are working together to further strengthen the country’s Ebola preparedness and address the gaps identified during the mid-January Ebola scare.

  • 391,301 people were newly internally displaced during October-December 2014, the majority as a result of flooding.

  • Fourteen water trucks, up from 11 trucks two weeks ago, were requested to address water shortages in East Hararge, West Hararge and West Arsi zones of Oromia region.

Nigeria: Boko Haram attacks continue, with Borno state capital Maiduguri and nearby military bases targeted on 25 January. Security forces pushed BH back from Maiduguri, but further attacks are expected. BH also raided villages in Michika local government area, Adamawa state. There are reports that BH has forbidden the use of vehicles in areas under its control.

December 2014 marked the first anniversary of the South Sudan conflict as efforts to restore peace and stability in Africa’s newest State continue.

One year since thousands of South Sudanese mostly women and children fled to seek refuge in Ethiopia, and in particular in the Gambella Region, the Government of Ethiopia, UNHCR and partners have been responding to the refugee emergency amid challenges.

Cameroon: 50,000 people are estimated displaced due to the recent increase in Boko Haram (BH) attacks in the northern regions. In the past week, an attack on a military base in Kolofata resulted in 143 BH killed, subsequently, BH kidnapped 80 people from one village – with three killed and 24 later released. The conflict has escalated regionally, with Chad pledging military support in Cameroon’s fight against Boko Haram.
