Disaster description

The flooding in Grozny, Russian Federation, Chechnya, occurred when heavy rains, lasting for two days non-stop, led to the bursting of the dam on the river Sunzha that normally protects the city from floodwaters. The flood situation worsened on the Sunzha River in the Oktyabrsky district of Grozny, and the dam broke on 27 Aug 2011. (IFRC bulletin, 2 Sep 2011)
