WASHINGTON, May 21, 2009 - The World Bank's Board of Executive Directors approved today an additional US$25 million to rehabilitate and improve roads damaged during the Tropical Storm No. 16, which caused considerable losses to the country's road infrastructure.

Rebeca Santos, Minister of Finance, stated that the credit approved today by the World Bank complements the US$48.6 million granted by mid last year for road rehabilitation.

According to a recent report from the International Monetary Fund, Nicaragua is considered at 'medium' vulnerability to negative effects of the financial crisis at macrolevel, based on its current GDP growth and financial reserves.

  • Food security throughout the country is stable, although it could start to deteriorate in the next three months, due to the start of the annual hunger season. During this season, after finishing their reserves, the poorest households depend completely upon the purchase of food. The government is in the process of activating a contingency plan to alleviate the situation.

    - The start of the rainy season, which marks the first (primera) harvest, is forecast for the second half of April until the end of May, depending on the area of the country.

During the last observation period, minimal amounts of precipitation were observed across Central America, with slightly higher totals (20- 40 mm) observed across the Gulf of Honduras and portions of Costa Rica and Panama. USDA Releases Final Rule on Food Assistance Program Regulations

KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 7, 2009-Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said today that an additional 51,700 tons of agricultural commodities, valued at nearly $80 million, will be provided to children in low-income, food-deficit countries under USDA's McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program for fiscal year 2009.

Highlights

High food prices persist in developing countries despite an improved global cereal supply situation and sharp decline in international prices. This is affecting access to food of large numbers of low-income vulnerable populations.

A recent analysis of domestic food prices for 58 developing countries shows that latest prices are higher than a year earlier in 78 percent of the cases, and in 43 percent of the cases are higher than 3 months earlier. Mostly affected are sub-Saharan African countries.

Agreement will expand scope of risk assessment project in the region.

The Inter-American Development Bank and the World Bank signed a memorandum of understanding on March 6th formalizing a joint effort to develop the Central American Probabilistic Risk Assessment (CAPRA) initiative.

The CAPRA initiative seeks to enhance the understanding disaster risk throughout the region by establishing a common methodology and tools to assess disaster risk.
