JOHANNESBURG, 30 March 2010 (IRIN) - The hapless people flooding ports and airport terminals in developed countries are occasionally seen as "environmental migrants" or even "environmentally induced migrants", fleeing natural disasters in their part of the world.
Now, some countries have begun turning this displacement into a positive learning experience by providing such migrants with temporary work permits to help them earn an income and acquire skills, making them more resilient when they return home.

ARGENTINA: Officials report 12,875 cases of dengue and 355 suspected cases. Figures are disputed by civil organizations.
COLOMBIA: A red alert was declared in the region of Timana, located in the south side of the Huila Department, due to a landslide caused by a geological failure. 450 families have been evacuated so far.

New funding from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has allowed IOM to deliver industrial ovens, kitchen equipment, mattresses and water storage tanks to vulnerable flood-affected Afro-Colombian communities living in the southwestern department of Nariño.
The six tonnes of emergency assistance were delivered by road to the Local Disaster Management and Prevention Team (CLOPAD, by its Spanish acronym), in the municipality of Tumaco, whose residents have been severely affected by the overflow of the Mira River due to incessant heavy rains.

Security incidents in Colombia
The situation is tense in the eastern department of Arauca. A major illegal armed group has issued threats of random attacks towards civilians and military objectives in the hope of securing the release of some of its ringleaders captured by the police and to commemorate the decease of a major rebel leader one year ago. The Colombian Defense Minister informed that some of the threats were also directed towards some politicians in the department.

ShelterBox has delivered a consignment of much needed aid to people left homeless by February's devastating floods in southern Colombia in South America.
