Overview

The Kosi river rises in the Tibetan plateau of China and flows across Nepal into Bihar, joining the Ganges near Kursela, India. On 18th August 2008, the Kosi breached its embankments at Kusaha in Nepal’s Sunsari district, resulting in massive floods across Nepal and Bihar. The Kosi floods were subsequently declared a national calamity by the Government of India (GoI).

Burma is one of the countries worst affected by extreme weather resulting from climate change, according to a new report that assesses the impact of global warming over a period of nearly two decades.

Published by the Berlin-based climate watchdog Germanwatch on Tuesday, the report, the Global Climate Risk Index, says that Bangladesh, Burma and Honduras were the countries most affected by extreme weather events from 1990 to 2008.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The massive Kosi River floods of August 2008 caused unprecedented loss to lives, livelihoods, infrastructure and property in north-eastern Bihar. Although floods have been a recurring feature in parts of the state, the 2008 floods were not usual. The Kosi burst its embankments and changed course, inundating areas of Bihar that had not experienced such flooding for half a century.

KATHMANDU, Jun 11, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Nepal and India Thursday conducted a joint inspection of a flood-prone river in the southern Terai plains of Nepal less than a year after it breached its embankment and caused devastation in both countries.

Nearly 1,000 people were killed and about three million displaced in eastern India's Bihar state last August after the Kosi river, flowing from Himalayas and hills in Nepal to India, breached its embankment after torrential rains.
