DIPECHO Regional Consultative Meeting to share experiences in reducing the impact of floods, landslides and earthquakes across Central Asia

ALMATY, March 24 (Reuters) - Thousands of people were left without fresh water in Kazakhstan on Monday after a major flood disrupted water supplies in the southwest of the Central Asian state, the Emergencies Ministry said.

Spring flooding is a recurring problem across Central Asia but an abrupt rise in temperatures following weeks of severe cold has exacerbated the problem this year.

SITUATION

1. On 21-22 February 2008, 48 settlements in South Kazakhstan (Sary-Agash, Ordabasyn, Aryss and Shardarya districts) were flooded as a result of heavy rains and a sudden increase in air temperature, which led to rapid melting of snow.

2. In total 2,383 houses were inundated; 298 houses, 8 schools, 2 primary medical centers and 2 bridges were destroyed, and large portions of roads were washed out.

HIGHLIGHTS

On 21-22 February 2008, as a result of the sudden increase in air temperature and heavy rains in the South of Kazakhstan, 48 settlements of the Sary-Agash, Ordabasyn, Aryss and Shardarya districts were flooded, leading to the death of one person and the displacement of more than 13,000 people.

The overall flooding situation remains a matter of concern for the immediate future.
