BRAZIL - FLOODING

Since March 2008, heavy rains have caused severe flooding in six states in the North-east region of Brazil including Maranhão, Ceará, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba and Pernambuco.

Civil Defense reports over 450,000 people affected in more than 260 municipalities. Approximately 69,000 people have been evacuated from their homes. Civil Defense is providing assistance in the affected areas, and as of last week, had distributed 828 tons of food.

At this time, all needs are being met with local and national resources.

Heavy rains beginning in late March caused flooding and mudslides in the normally semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil. According to the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia, flooding affected 415,691 people in 250 municipalities in Ceará, Maranh=E3o, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, and Rio Grande do Norte states as of April 11.

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 8 (Reuters) - Flooding from heavy rains that killed at least 34 people and left 190,000 homeless in Brazil's northeast now threatens to spread disease, authorities said on Tuesday.

The unusually strong rains in recent days washed out roads, tore down bridges and flooded homes across the region.

Crops and livestock throughout the region were destroyed and the government is considering compensation for farmers and ranchers, National Integration Minister Geddel Vieira Lima said.

Brazilian civil defense officials report that at least 21 people have died and 82,000 have been driven from their homes by floods and mudslides in the country's northeast.

The Brazilian government is releasing more than $300 million in emergency aid for the states affected by the flooding.

Governors of the affected states met with President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brasilia on Monday to request aid.

Officials say 17 of the dead drowned in the state of Paraiba, where 14,000 have become homeless.

'At least nine people died and twelve others were injured in floods that hit the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro last Saturday and Sunday,' said José Sant'Ana Mateus from the state's Civil Defence Authority. Heavy rain caused flooding and mudslides - many of those who lost their lives were on a hillside. Some were buried alive in their homes.

The Civil Defence Authority said the equivalent of three week's rain had fallen in just a few hours.
