This preliminary Emergency Appeal seeks CHF 750,000 (USD 731,134 or EUR 462,475) in cash, kind, or services to support the National Societies of West and Central Africa to assist 47,500 beneficiaries.

CHF 483,047 has been allocated from the Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to start the planned activities. Discussions are currently taking place to reallocate approximately CHF 550,000 remaining from the 2007 West Africa floods appeal to support this appeal.

Tens of millions of people had been affected this year by floods in countries all over the world. La situation des inondations en République Centrafricaine devient de plus en plus préoccupante. En plus des arrondissements de la ville de Bangui, la ville de Bossangoa située à 305 km est également touchée.

Il faut noter que le débordement du cours d'eau Ngubagara qui traverse la ville de Bangui du nord au sud et se jette dans le fleuve Oubangui expose la population aux inondations.

Overview of the 2007 Programme of Work

As the end of 2007 nears, the number of people the World Food Programme is seeking to support has risen to 83 million. The amount of food assistance required to assist these people is valued at US$3.4 billion. Considering resources mobilized thus far in 2007, the current level of funding falls short by some US$653 million.

Additional resources amounting to approximately US$800 million are required before the end of 2007 to ensure uninterrupted food aid deliveries for ongoing activities.

Over one million people in East Africa are now believed affected by floods. Hundreds of thousands of others in West Africa have also lost their homes or been displaced by floods. As a result, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is now warning of potential food security crises in the regions.

John English is the federation's disaster management coordinator for East Africa. From Nairobi, he spoke to VOA English to Africa Service reporter Joe De Capua about the risk to food security.
