The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government (HKSARG) released $272.34 million from the Disaster Relief Fund to provide immediate relief to people in distress outside Hong Kong in the year ending March 31, 2008.

In response to appeals made by governments and international relief organisations, grants were disbursed for the early relief of victims in places outside Hong Kong hard-hit by major disasters.

For 2007-08, assistance was given through 22 relief projects operated by seven relief organisations to help needy victims tide over the calamities that had befallen them.

In the past year 2007, the Chinese Red Cross put into 1.384 billion yuan in cash and kind put into its relief operations nationwide, which is reveled at the Society's annual board session held in Hangzhou, capital city of Zhejiang province on Jan. 7, 2008.

According to the meeting, total of 2.139 billion yuan in cash and kind were raised by Red Cross organizations at all levels on the mainland China, in which 638 million by national office and its affiliated institutions, 2.139 billion by local branches.

PWS&D is working with Action by Churches Together International (ACT) and Canadian Foodgrains Bank (CFGB) to increase life-saving support and emergency assistance, but much more is necessary to reach the staggering numbers of affected people. Reports indicate that 45 million people have been affected by flooding in India alone.
