Programme summary:

Natural and weather related disasters are increasing in frequency. The countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean remain vulnerable to the impact of these natural and man-made disasters.

In 2006 and 2007, the Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) provided operational, logistics and preparedness support to the region's National Societies in response to 33 emergencies, in an effective and efficient manner according to the needs.

La saison agricole de printemps, considérée comme la plus importante en Haïti pour sa grande contribution à la production agricole nationale, touche presque à son terme. Heavy rains in northeast Haiti have caused massive flooding which has displaced over 190 families in Plan communities.

Plan Haiti staff have been working with the Mayor and partner organizations in Ouanaminthe department to gain a more comprehensive assessment of the extent of flood damage and to co-ordinate relief efforts for affected families.

An estimated 500 people have been made homeless in Ferrier, where floods have rendered roads impassable. In Concilia - which is near Fort-Liberté Program Unit - 56 houses have been partially damaged by floods.

Floods hit northeast Haiti, Plan communities affected

Heavy rains have caused massive flooding in northeast Haiti, affecting several communities, including those in Ouanaminthe department where Plan works. The flooding was reportedly caused by water overflowing from the river Massacre, on the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

In Ouanaminthe, 190 households have been made homeless, including 109 children. More than 100 homes have been partially damaged and 28 totally destroyed in the floods.

1. By mid-March 2007, heavy rains affected several regions in Haiti. The National System on Risk and Disaster Management (SNGRD) still maintains moderated alert on strong rains, with which may cause the overflowing of rivers, floods and landslides, in most of the country. Nevertheless, there was a progressive improvement of the weather conditions since Tuesday morning, March 27.
