The International Federation's Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) is a source of un-earmarked money created by the Federation in 1985 to ensure that immediate financial support is available for Red Cross Red Crescent response to emergencies. Partnership for a Better Life

Exceptionally heavy rains in Burundi in late 2006 halted the country's winter harvest and severely limited the availability of seeds for the 2007 planting season. Compounding the situation, a disease attacking the food staple cassava decimated the crop in many areas affected by the heavy rains and floods.

To help get food to the 2.5 million victims of food shortages, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) contributed $5 million in food aid to the U.N.

Montreal, May 7, 2007 - In addition to supporting important relief efforts in conflict zones on a year-round basis, the past few months have also seen DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE responding to requests for aid after disastrous flooding affected significant areas in Bolivia, Burundi, Indonesia and Mozambique. The Emergency Aid programme of DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE continues to monitor the situation and so far has already approved help to partners totalling some $406,400.

In Burundi, especially, the year-end flooding has only made an already precarious food security situation much worse.

Update on the implementation of agricultural season 2007-B : Since the beginning of the seed distribution operations, FAO/ Emergency Rehabilitation and Coordination Unit (ERCU) has already completed 75% of the planned distributions. As a result of last December's torrential rains, Burundi's population has once again been plunged into an extremely precarious situation. The population, already vulnerable due to conflict, pandemics and erratic climate hazards, is on the brink of a food crisis. Support is urgently needed as in this context, the ongoing peace process risks being affected.

Households in a constant state of food insecurity

The excessive rainfall of the last two farming seasons has heavily affected Burundi's population, which is heavily dependent (90%) on agricultural production.

Activities and Updates

Implementation of season 2007-B : The distribution of seeds and seed protection rations which started two weeks ago is ongoing nationwide. FAO/Emergency Rehabilitation and Coordination Unit (FAO/ERCU) has so far achieved 60% of its planning through direct distributions and seed fairs. The dispatching was also completed throughout the remaining provinces and the distribution is under way in collaboration with various partners including national and international NGOs.

Ethiopia - Food security improvement - A bumper 2006/2007 meher season has been forecast with an estimated cereal and pulse production of 20.1 million tonnes. This is about 50% above the average of previous five years. The number of people in need of emergency assistance in 2007 is, therefore, lower than in recent years and is estimated at 1.36 million, compared to 2.6 in 2006.
