Programme summary:

Natural and weather related disasters are increasing in frequency. The countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean remain vulnerable to the impact of these natural and man-made disasters.

In 2006 and 2007, the Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) provided operational, logistics and preparedness support to the region's National Societies in response to 33 emergencies, in an effective and efficient manner according to the needs.

Les conditions de sécurité alimentaire sont demeurées stables en Haïti au cours du mois d'avril. Celle-ci a été marquée par d'intenses activités de semis de maïs et de haricot à travers de nombreuses zones agro écologiques du pays. Il en résulte un début de période de soudure dans de nombreuses zones où les semis ont déjà été effectués depuis mars (la plaine des Cayes par exemple).

3. Disaster Response

In 2006, Latin Americ and the Caribbean were spared major disasters of the magnitude of Tropical Storm Stan (2005) or Hurricane Ivan (2004). However, many other emergency situations posed serious concerns and required substantial technical support from PAHO/WHO. A review of these situations in which PAHO worked with member states to respond to pressing health issues is provided below.

Unusually high seasonal rainfall at the end of 2005 caused widespread flooding in several Regions of Guyana in early 2006.

FAO asks for US$14 million to support agriculture

Rome, 18 December 2006- After several years of social and political unrest aggravated by recurrent hurricanes, floods, droughts and other natural disasters which hampered its development, Haiti is at a crossroads. Recent democratic elections and the stabilization process backed by the international community today create an environment conducive to recovery.

To help the island reverse the trend, FAO needs some US$14 million for the early recovery of the agriculture based livelihoods.
