Summary:

This Emergency Appeal was launched on 18 August 2006 for CHF 607,487 (USD 491,136 or EUR 384,006) for six months to assist 3,000 households (15,000 people) affected by the flooding.

On 14 September 2006, in light of the new information gathered through the assessments, a revised plan of action was published, the appeal budget was revised to CHF 2,017,353 (USD 1,642,528 or EUR 1,280,412) …

As the waters of the Nile recede slowly in and around Khartoum, the 15,000 residents of Tuti Island - located in the confluence of the White and Blue Nile rivers - are inspecting the damage done by the recent flooding in the rivers.

It could have been worse - much worse, as families in other parts of the country are finding out the hard way. It is now estimated that more than 90 thousand people have been affected by the floods that have devastated large tracts of land in Sudan over the last few weeks.

Authorities in Khartoum fear that the ongoing flooding in Sudan will lead to further outbreaks of cholera and malaria, further aggravating the plight of more than 90 thousand people who have been affected by the flooding since the beginning of August. The Sudanese Red Crescent, supported by the International Federation, is now revising its preliminary emergency appeal that should be issued in the next few days.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies today issued preliminary emergency appeals for a total of approximately 1.7 million Swiss francs (1.4 million US$/1.1 million€) to provide urgently-needed assistance to thousands of people affected by steadily increasing flooding in Ethiopia and Sudan. Revised appeals for assistance are expected to be issued in the coming weeks, as results of ongoing assessments become available.
