Programme summary:

Natural and weather related disasters are increasing in frequency. The countries in Central and South America and the Caribbean remain vulnerable to the impact of these natural and man-made disasters.

In 2006 and 2007, the Pan American Disaster Response Unit (PADRU) provided operational, logistics and preparedness support to the region's National Societies in response to 33 emergencies, in an effective and efficient manner according to the needs.

Strong rains and severe floods have affected almost 150,000 people in the VIII and IX regions of southern Chile. According to the Chilean Office of Emergencies (ONEMI), 23 people have died, 7000 families have been severely affected and almost 900 are already living in temporary shelters.

The Chilean Red Cross has launched a national appeal in response to the emergency. Some 300 volunteers are already delivering humanitarian aid and basic health care to the injured. Food, children clothes, shoes, mattresses and hygiene articles are the priority needs.

El Ministro del interior, Andrés Zaldívar, señaló que por expresa instrucción de la Presidenta de la República será despachado esta tarde, a las 17:00 horas aproximadamente desde el Grupo 10 de la FACH, un tercer avión Hércules con materiales de ayuda a la comunidad afectada por los temporales, que complementarán la cadena de envíos terrestres por parte del Gobierno a la VIII Región del BíoBío.

ONEMI despachó en horas de esta tarde el tercer avión Hércules con ayuda a la VIII Región, consistente en 15 toneladas de elementos de apoyo a las comunidades afectadas, específicamente de la Provincia del BíoBío, entre los que se cuentan cajas de alimentos, catres de campaña, colchonetas, frazadas y bobinas de nylon, con lo cual ascienden a 100 las toneladas despachadas a la Región más impactada por el temporal. Además, fue enviado un camión a la IX Región con alimentos, colchonetas y frazadas.

El voluntariado presente en todas las regiones perjudicadas por el sistema frontal que afecta a la zona centro sur del país, se encuentra trabajando en terreno, recibiendo y entregando la ayuda necesaria para las victimas, que hasta el momento suman más 28.000.

Además, trabajan arduamente para recibir la colaboración de la comunidad que será destinada a los damnificados que ha dejado el temporal.
