HIGHLIGHTS:

A Road Reopened in Tskhinvali

A road which connects the Georgian villages in the South Ossetian conflict zone and passes through the region's capital Tskhinvali has been reopened in the beginning of July. According to the press office of the State Minister for Conflict Resolution Issues, the decision to reopen this route was made during talks between the Georgian and South Ossetian law enforcement agencies on July 1.

Thousands of people have been affected by floods sweeping across Georgia. The floods, caused by a combination of torrential rains and melting snow, first started at the end of April and there is no sign they are over.

IOCC recently responded to flood-stricken communities in Romania, the Republic of Georgia and Serbia where prolonged periods of rain in late April caused widespread flooding and damage. Below, flood-affected communities in Romania were aided by the Romanian government and Romanian Orthodox Church in the immediate aftermath through the provision of emergency items and assistance with home reconstruction.

Heavy rains have caused major damage in the eastern Georgian regions of Kakheti and Mtskheta-Mtianeti. Transport infrastructure has been heavily affected. Many bridges and roads have been washed away, cutting off access to some villages.

Due to the damage of power transmission lines, the population of the Mtskheta-Mtianeti region has been left without electricity.

Reportedly, the water level in the Zhinvali reservoir, which is located in 70 kilometers from capital Tbilisi, has reached a critical stage.

Georgia: UMCOR Provides Flood Relief

In the Republic of Georgia "April Showers" turned into April floods this year. For nearly a week, daily torrential rains accumulated, causing landslides and the worst flooding in recent history. The resulting destruction includes downed electric lines and contaminated water systems. UMCOR's NGO field office unit helped to assess the damage in four districts of western Georgia and build plans for disaster response and recovery.
