In 2004 and 2005, the small city of Comanesti in Bacau County, Romania was devastated by flooding of the Trotus River. In the process, hundreds of homes were destroyed, leaving many families homeless.

The U.S. Government was among the first donors to respond to the crisis in this community, donating emergency supplies including food, personal hygiene items, portable heaters, and water purification systems. CHF International/Romania continued this assistance through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded Romanian Flood Recovery (RFR) Program.

report Xinhua

BUCHAREST, Aug 28, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Torrential rains swept Romania's eastern and southeastern regions over the past two days, causing heavy losses, but so far there have been no reports of casualties.

TV images showed water as high as over one meter in many places and thousands of hectares of farmland and crops were destroyed. Strong winds uprooted trees and electricity poles, leading to a power cut in some villages.

Constanta, a port city in southeastern Romania, was the worst hit with three derricks blown down by wind and three vessels swept away from the port.
