Indra Maya Tamang, 56, a resident of Sindhulimadhi municipality, did not know the Gwang Khola that always used to be kind and a good source of water would one day turn violent and sweep away her house and all her belongings in minutes. She recalls, she had just got up and was preparing morning tea when the river swelled and swept away all the 14 houses on the bank of the river.

Development Program Overview

Background

The Nepal Development Program continued in 14 districts of the western, central and eastern regions in 2004 in spite of widespread conflict and deepening security situation particularly in the far-western region of Nepal. The empowerment program in some VDCs (Village Development Committees) of Achham, Doti and Kailali districts however suffered substantial disruption after mid 2004.

CROP AND FOOD SUPPLY SITUATION

OVERVIEW

As of October 2004, the number of countries facing serious food shortages throughout the world stands at 35 with 23 in Africa, 6 in Asia/Near East, 5 in Latin America and 1 in Europe. The causes are varied but civil strife and adverse weather, including drought predominate. In many of these countries, the HIV/AIDS pandemic is a major contributing factor.

The PAL-Nepal team returned to capital on Friday after completing its nine-day field trip to the flood-hit eastern terai districts of Dhanusha, Mahottari, Sarlahi and Parsa. During the field study the team assessed the extent to which previous investments in disaster preparedness increased Nepal Red Cross Society and community capacity to cope with disasters.
