La Commission européenne a adopté, le 3 décembre, une décision relative à une aide humanitaire d'un montant de 700 000 euros (environ 32.850.000 pesos dominicains) pour permettre à la République dominicaine de faire face aux inondations dont elle a été victime au mois de novembre 2003. Cette aide sera acheminée par le biais de l'Office d'aide humanitaire de la Commission européenne (ECHO), placée sous la supervision du commissaire Poul Nielson.

Situation

1. Since mid-November torrential rains have caused severe floods as well as overflowing of rivers and dams. A report provided by the National Emergency Commission on 1 December 2003 confirms that 10 people have died and 3 were injured in the disaster. According to the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Dominican Republic, the latest information available about the impact on people and housing is as follows:

500 people, victims of floods in the northwest region of the Dominican Republic, repatriated by Dominican Republic authorities

Episcopal Relief and Development is assisting people left homeless in north and northwestern areas of the Dominican Republic. In November, severe flooding damaged thousands of homes as well as farmland and crops. Heavy rains burst river banks in the El Cibao region. The most affected areas are in the provinces of Santiago, Duarte, Monte Cristi, and Valverde.
