Beijing (dpa) - China's death toll from floods this year has reached 1,208, state media reported on Thursday, as areas along the Yellow river continued the alert.

Natural disasters have killed 1,911 people in China this year and caused direct economic losses of 151.4 billion yuan (18.3 billion dollars), the official Xinhua news agency quoted Vice-Minister of Civil Affairs Yang Yanyin as saying.

One of the most serious natural disasters this year was the flooding of eastern China's Huaihe river valley in late June and early July, Yang said.

BEIJING, Oct 8 (Reuters) - Floods in northern China triggered by weeks of heavy rain have killed 29 people and destroyed tens of thousands of homes with no let-up in sight, a local official said on Wednesday.

"More than 160 people have been injured following rains lasting more than a month,'' said Xie Yimin, an official from the civil affairs bureau in Yuncheng, Shanxi province.

"More rain is forecast for Thursday and Friday, so things will get worse,'' he said by telephone.

(OTTAWA, July 22, 2003) - The Canadian Red Cross is accepting cash donations in support of the International Red Cross appeal for $8.1 million to assist 440,000 people who have been displaced by large-scale floods in the eastern, central and southern provinces of China. The floods have left about 3.5 million people homeless and affected more than 100 million in 16 provinces, with water levels in some areas above historical records.
