ABIDJAN, 18 December (IRIN) - The death toll from a cholera outbreak that has swept through the Niger river valley in Mali since early November has reached 106, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.

As of 12 December 2003, the Ministry of Health, Mali has reported a total number of 1216 cases, including 106 deaths (case fatality rate, 8.72%) in Koulikoro, Segou, Mopti, Tombouctou, Sikasso regions and in Bamako. (see previous report ).

As of 2 December 2003, the Ministry of Health, Mali has reported a total number of 1 149 cases, including 78 deaths in the Koulikoro, Segou and Mopti regions (see previous report) .
Médecins sans Frontières and Médecins du Monde are providing technical assistance and supplies. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the WHO Global Task Force on Cholera Control is sending an intervention team and cholera kits.

The Ministry of Health, Mali has reported a total number of 693 cases and 55 deaths of cholera in 3 regions along the Niger River: Segou, Mopti and Koulikoro from 11 August to 9 November 2003. Vibrio cholerae El Tor has been laboratory confirmed by the Institut National de Santé Publique, Bamako, Mali.
The Ministry of Health has intensified surveillance and developed an action plan to control the outbreak. Médecins sans Frontières-Luxembourg has opened cholera treatment centres and provided equipment and materials.
