Swiss Re's latest sigma study reports man-made and natural catastrophes claimed more than 33 000 lives worldwide in 2001. At USD 34.4 billion, the burden on property insurance due to catastrophe losses was extremely high - with an estimated USD 19 billion incurred by property and business interruption losses arising from the 11 September event. Furthermore, the insurance industry is having to cover liability and life insurance losses related to the attack which are estimated between USD 16.5 and 39 billion.

In response to floods disaster in Vietnam, a volunteer medical relief team supported by SIF treated more then 3800 flood victims from 9-20 Dec 2001 in the Dong Thap province. The disaster was Vietnam's second worst in 40 years - last year being the worst. This year's floods left 353 people dead. Nearly 70 per cent of the victims are children. 356,700 houses, homes to 1.78 million people, had been inundated in 10 flood-hit provinces. Homes have been destroyed, and more seriously, the water supply in the region has been badly contaminated.

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (17 December 2001) - Some 350,000 rural Vietnamese, many of them indigenous and from ethnic minorities, in the impoverished Central Region will have better living conditions as a result of a concessional loan of US$43.1 million approved today by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The project includes several socio-economic initiatives to help 139 poor upland communes (which comprise several villages) in four provinces. War, disease, floods and forced resettlement have left much of the Central Region's population feeling powerless.

Singapore, 8 December 2001 - In response to the floods disaster in Vietnam, a 9-member volunteer medical relief team will be heading for the Thanh Binh District of Southern Vietnam on Sunday, 9 December 2001 on a 12-day relief mission. Starting in September 2001, Vietnam has been inundated by floods. This disaster is the second worst in 40 years - last year being the worst. It is the third year in a row that Vietnam has been hit by killer floods.

More than two dozen people, mostly middle-age and elderly women, sat on the pavement near Vietnam's parliament session and held up placards detailing government abuses and calling for justice.

As of mid-November this year, as many as 576 Vietnamese people were killed by natural disasters, Vietnam's official news agency VNA Thursday quoted Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Huy Ngo as saying.
