Highlights

The Government of Sudan's military offensive in Leech State (Upper Nile Region) is deeply disturbing given that populations in the affected areas were already highly food insecure. This follows successive years of poor yields and limited access to other food options due to civil insecurity.

Physical insecurity is exacerbating food insecurity and remains a major threat in parts of Upper Nile, Bahr-el-Ghazal and Eastern Equatoria Regions.

Background

Highlights

Civil insecurity still prevails in many areas, making food access extremely difficult, especially for the poor and most socially disadvantaged.

Bieh State is currently extremely food insecure. WFP field team reports are corroborated by the local authorities who describe the situation as desperate. Food aid assistance has begun and may need to continue up to the harvests in 2002.

Deteriorating nutritional conditions are currently reported among the food insecure groups in Bieh State, IDPs in Tambura County, and in parts of Bahr-el-Ghazal Region.

MEDIA ADVISORY
Rome, 17 January 2002 -- An FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission visited southern Sudan from 8 to 30 October 2001 and northern Sudan from 16 November to 6 December 2001 to assess current season cereal production, forecast wheat production from areas prepared for planting, and estimate cereal import requirements in the marketing year 2001/02 (November/October).

14 Jan 2002 description

Highlights

The FAO/WFP Crop and Food Supply Assessment Mission estimates a 12 percent increase in cereal production in 2001/2002 compared to 2000/2001. Despite this, a cereal deficit estimated at 37,000MT is anticipated.

Food insecurity will remain a major humanitarian concern in 2002, making emergency food assistance inevitable.

BACKGROUND

Highlights

Food availability and access options in most secure locations in southern Sudan are currently good. However, insecurity and its related consequences is limiting or precluding access to most of the available food options in parts of Bahr-el-Ghazal Region.

Heavier than normal seasonal rains were experienced in the southern part of the country during November. If this continues, it may have mixed consequences for the second cropping season in progress in these areas.
