Geneva, 21 June 2001

Dear Colleagues,

From mid-February until April this year there were intense rains in the highlands of Puno in the southern region of Peru. The waters of Lake Titicaca rose to an extraordinary level destroying crops and washing away entire villages. Nearly ten thousand families have been affected, forced to abandon their homes and losing their crops, livestock, homes and equipment.

31 May 2001 description

In coastal areas, wheat crops are being harvested and yields are expected to be average. Yellow maize is developing normally and an increase of 8 per cent from last year is forecast due both to water availability and larger plantings. In the highlands, where most peasants live, harvesting of white maize crops started in May and will continue until July. Aggregate output of the past three months indicate a fall in production of 15 per cent from last year.

Silver Spring, Maryland - The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA Peru) is helping more than 4,000 people in the Ilave and Pilcuyo provinces affected by landslides and flooding due to overflowing of the rivers in Puno in the Lake Titicaca basin of Peru. This is the rainiest season since 1986.

23 Mar 2001 description

Planting of 2001 wheat crops (November/March) in the important producing provinces of Junín, Hancavelica and Ayacucho is completed, and harvest is due to start from May. The forecast is for a small reduction in output due to a fall in the area planted. A similar outlook is forecast for white maize which is sown from September till January, and due to be harvested from April. Conversely, yellow maize production in 2001 is forecast to increase reflecting both water availability and larger plantings (white maize is planted all year round and used as animal feed).
