February 2002
Temperate weather conditions in the traditionally harsh winter month of February continued to cause concern for the winter and spring crop harvests. Agricultural activities, including preparation of fields and seedbeds for the spring barley, and the main rice and maize crops, were initiated a little earlier than usual in most provinces. Intense tree planting was observed in Kangwon province in an effort to halt the soil erosion and resulting landslides that caused the devastating floods last October.
