KATHMANDU, Nov 9, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Japan has agreed to provide a grant assistance worth 10.67 million US dollars for Nepal to mitigate the kingdom's economic difficulties and its debt burden, according to a statement by the Japanese embassy here.

It is the first ever non-project grant aid extended by Japan to Nepal to help the Nepali government in its efforts to promote economic and social structural adjustment, state-run English daily The Rising Nepal reported Saturday quoting the statement.

Earlier in the year, heavy monsoon rains, floods and landslides, killed a number of people and displaced several thousand in the worst affected areas in central parts of the country. Crops, mainly rice, infrastructure and communication systems were also damaged and food supplies were affected in remote areas. The current forecast indicates that paddy production this year will around average at 3.7 million tonnes.

Thousands of people in the mountainous kingdom of Nepal are struggling to recover from damage inflicted by severe floods and landslides caused by heavy monsoon rains earlier this summer. Landslides have cut off many parts of the country since June and have caused many rivers to change their course or branch into new tributaries. Entire villages and settlements have been flooded and many communities have been forced to relocate. In all, 72 of the country's 75 districts have been hit, with an estimated 10,000 families affected.

  1. On Friday, August 18, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency grant aid of 300,000 US dollars to the Government of the Kingdom of Nepal, which has suffered seriously from a nationwide flood.

    2. A localized torrential downpour which lasted for four days from July 31 caused floods in Nepal, resulting in large-scale human and material damage nationwide. According to the Government of Nepal, more than 112 lives have been lost and more than 50,000 people are afflicted; and damage has expanded to agricultural products and livestock.
