Sri Lanka: Floods - Nov 2000

Disaster description

The Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology reported that the eastern districts of Ampara and Batticaloa were battered by 105 mm of rain from 18-19 November; on 20 November another 238 mm of rain fell on Batticaloa. According to the Government of Sri Lanka, 400,000 people had been affected by floods. Media reported that 94,534 families had been affected in the districts of Batticaloa and 8,000 families in Ampara. UNDP Colombo reported that nearly 15,000 families lost their homes.
