VALENCIA, 29 MAY 2001 - His Excellency Mr. Famara L. Jata, Gambia Secretary of State for Finance and Economic Affairs and Mr. Cyril Enweze, Vice-president, Operations of the African Development Bank Group (ADB) signed today a grant agreement of 500,000 US $ for emergency relief to flood victims in Gambia.

The objective of the emergency operation is to assist the flood-affected communities of the Gambia to cope with the flood damages incurred during the rainy season of 1999.

Cyril Enweze, Vice-président du Groupe de la BAD chargé des opérations ont procédé ce jour à Valence, Espagne à la signature d'un accord portant sur l'octroi d'un don de 500 000 $ EU à titre de secours d'urgence aux victimes des inondations en Gambie.

L'opération a pour but d'aider les communautés affectées par les inondations à faire face aux dégâts subis pendant la saison des pluies de 1999.

A fully-funded appeal has allowed the entire West Africa Regional programme to be effectively implemented over the September-November period, with positive achievements realised in most areas. The favourable donor response has also promoted productive collaboration between the respective National Societies and the International Federation, providing a
sound basis for growth in 2000.

Harvest prospects are good, reflecting satisfactory growing conditions. Unusually heavy rains have been registered, notably in August. They caused substantial flooding, notably in the west. Cumulative rainfall is above normal as it generally exceeds 1000 mm, reaching up to 1723.4 mm in Sapu in south CRD. Pastures are adequate. No significant pest infestation has been reported.
