"I joined the Red Cross because I personally wanted to make a difference. For me it is about taking an active role in society," Udeni says. She then explains that there is an old tradition of voluntary social work in Sri Lanka in general, and among the Red Cross youth in particular. "It is called Shramadana, which can be translated as voluntary labour. It is one of our main activities - we help cleaning public hospitals and old people's homes or, for example, take part in vaccination campaigns."

Authorities in Sri Lanka say at least 15-thousand families have been made homeless after heavy rain and flooding in the country's north and east.

Officials say about two thirds of the victims are from the eastern province while the others are in the northern Wanni region.

State aid is being sought to feed the displaced people.
