Background

Vietnam experiences nearly annual flooding during its monsoon season, which typically runs from July to November. Flooding has been particularly devastating this year in the Mekong Delta region of southern Vietnam, where prolonged and heavy monsoons since July have caused the worst flooding in sixty years.

05 Aug 1999 description

Once delays in obtaining government construction permits have been overcome the construction of 2,440 prefabricated houses can be completed, thus bringing to a close the third and final part of this relief operation, designed to supply more permanent solutions to the quasi-annual flooding.

1. According to the latest update issued by the Standing Office of the Central Committee for Flood and Storm Control (CCFSC), Typhoon Dawn and other tropical storms which hit the central provinces from 11 to 26 November caused extensive flooding and damage as follows (as of 28 November 1998):

OVER 150 DEAD FROM TWO WEEKS OF TROPICAL STORMS AND WIDESPREAD HEAVY DAMAGE TO CENTRAL AND SOUTH CENTRAL VIET NAM

The Viet Nam News article below gives the official account of the current situation in Viet Nam after three Tropical Storms hit the country in rapid succession over the last two weeks. Another tropical storm is currently taking shape east of the Philippines. The AFAP Office in Ha Noi is also reporting that the North-South railway between Ha Noi and Ho Chi Minh City has been cut by the flooding.
