Disaster description
UN Resident Coordinator issued consolidated report on damage caused by torrential rains to Northern and Central Luzon including Metro Manila area, brought by Typhoon Gening (international code name Kent). Number of persons affected in regions I, III, IV, V and national capital region (Metro Manila) totalled 178,803 or 36,008 families. Casualties totalled 4. In province of Ilocos Norte, damage to infrastructure and agriculture mounts to about USD 252,000 (p 6,407 million). Province of Batanes was devastated, but confirmed details are not yet available due to destruction of communication lines. […] Typhoon Helming (international code name Nina) crossed over Luzon on 4 September, causing heavy rains. It was the second weather disturbance to hit the Philippines in a week. (UN DHA, 5 Sep 1995)
Updated report on damage caused by torrential rains caused by Typhoon Gening (international code name Kent) indicates that number of persons affected in regions I, II, III, IV, V and national capital region (Metro Manila) totalled 195,886 or 39,358 families. Casualties totalled 6. In Ilocos Norte province, damage to infrastructure and agriculture increased to about USD 351,000 (p 8.916 million). In Batanes province, damage to crops, infrastructure and private properties amounted to about USD 3,078,000 (p 78.187 million). In Bacolor town in Pampanga province, 500 houses were buried under a lahar from 4 to 5 feet deep. Three schools, public market, water works, church and roads were damaged. In Florida Blanca town also in Pampanga, earth dikes, spur dikes and sandbagging were partially washed out or eroded. Damage to crops, livestock and infrastructure amounted to about USD 379,000 (P 9.636 million). UN Resident Coordinator issued consolidated report on damage caused by flashflood which hit areas near Parker Volcano in Mindanao Island. On 6 September, flashflood inundated 7 municipalities in South Cotabato province and 4 in Sultan Kudarat province. Population affected in two provinces are: in South Cotabato - 15,563 persons or 3,052 families, and in Sultan Kudarat - 8,915 persons or 2,172 families. Reported casualties include 48 dead, 7 injured and 382 missing. In South Cotabato province, estimated cost of damage to bridges, roads, agriculture, private property and transportation is about USD 31.909 million (PHP 327.2 million). Damage to 321 houses was also reported. In Sultan Kudarat province, estimated cost of damage to bridges, roads and transportation is about USD 2.860 million (PHP 72.7 million). Damage to 12,261 ha of agriculture and 27 houses was also reported. (UN DHA, 11 Sep 1995)
