China: Floods - Jun 1991

Disaster description

A UNDRO delegate returned to Geneva on the 31st of August after a 5-week mission to China concerning the floods that affected the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu and Henan (East China) in June/July 1991.

During his mission in China, the UNDRO delegate undertook two field missions covering the areas affected by the floods. From 24 to 29 July, the delegate visited Anhui and Jiangsu provinces to assess the situation and to submit recommendations for the appropriate use of emergency funds.

Anhui province:

  • death toll: 556

  • number of homeless: 5.93 million

  • number of persons evacuated: 4,922,300

  • number of dwellings destroyed or needing repairs: 2.251 million

Jiangsu province:

  • death toll: 260

  • number of homeless: 2.12 million

  • number of persons evacuated: 3.36 million

  • number of dwellings destroyed or needing repairs: 1.35 million (UN DHA, 3 Sep 1991)
