Kazakhstan: Flash Floods - Apr 2014
A flash flood triggered by a dam burst on 31 Mar 2014 killed five people and injured nine others in Kazakhstan's northern Karaganda region (oblast). The overflowing water flooded up to 354 houses in Kokpekty village. Some 400 inhabitants were evacuated as the flood water reached as high as 1.5-1.8 meters in the village. Within a few days the flood waters receded. (IFRC, 9 Oct 2014)
In order to strengthen the specific Red Cross / Red Crescent contribution to development, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) was supporting the Kazakhstan Red Crescent Society’s programmes addressing tuberculosis (TB) and vulnerabilities related to migration during the reporting period.
