Introduction

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA) supports disaster response and preparedness activities in 20 countries by working closely with Humanitarian Coordinator’s (HC)/Resident Coordinator’s (RC) offices, OCHA Country Offices and Humanitarian Advisory Teams (HATs).

Bni Ansar (Nador) - HM King Mohammed VI launched, Tuesday in the Commune of Bni Ansar (northeastern province of Nador), an anti-flood project for a sum of 85 million dirhams (around 9 million dollars).

Explanations were given to the Monarch on this project, which is part of the 2010-2013 urban development program of the city of Nador that mobilizes investments estimated at 600 million dirhams (65.5 million dollars).

The Special Humanitarian Envoy for the UN xxSecretary General, Mr. Abdul Aziz Arrukban, went on mission to Gaza on 27-28 February. This operation is expected to be implemented over 6 months, and will therefore be completed by 30 April, 2009; a Final Report will be made available by 30 July 2009 (three months after the end of the operation).

More than 200 Moroccan Red Crescent volunteers and staff continue to assist more than 6,000 people left homeless by torrential rains that have devastated 16 regions in the country since early October. The subsequent flooding has left at least 30 people dead, affected some 20,000, and destroyed homes, roads, water and sanitation systems, crops and livestock.

Since early October, the Red Crescent has been providing more than 6,000 people, housed in temporary shelters or with relatives and friends, with food, blankets, kitchen utensils and clothing.
