CAI LAY DISTRICT, 5 May 2010 (IRIN) - In some countries swimming is an extra-curricular activity for children, but in Vietnam it can be key to survival.

Throughout the year, an average of 10 children and adolescents drown each day, according to the Ministry of Health.

To reduce the number of deaths and injuries, the government has teamed up with NGOs to launch pilot programmes in the southern provinces, where children are taught how to swim and cope during the annual floods.

Bangkok/Ha Noi, 15 December 2009 - Climate change will have serious consequences for Viet Nam's Mekong and Red River Deltas - two key rice and agricultural producing areas in the country - unless global warming is addressed.

The Red River Delta, particularly Quang Ninh province, and the Mekong River Delta are densely populated areas and home to over 40 percent of the country's population.

Both have emerged as the most vulnerable areas in the Viet Nam Climate Change Assessment Report.

Burma is one of the countries worst affected by extreme weather resulting from climate change, according to a new report that assesses the impact of global warming over a period of nearly two decades.

Published by the Berlin-based climate watchdog Germanwatch on Tuesday, the report, the Global Climate Risk Index, says that Bangladesh, Burma and Honduras were the countries most affected by extreme weather events from 1990 to 2008.

An agreement on US assistance in improving capacity of flood forecast and response has recently been signed between the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA).

Accordingly, the US agency will provide aid of US $583,000 for Vietnam to reinforce efforts and systems to give early warnings about floods and the ability to more effectively respond to these natural disasters.

Tokyo_(dpa) _ The Japanese government was expected to provide 2 billion dollars in yen loans to Bangladesh, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam over the next two years to support their efforts to combat global warming, media reports said Wednesday.

Prime Minister Taro Aso was to announce the aid later in the day along with Tokyo's target for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions after the Kyoto Protocol expires in 2012, Jiji Press said.

Only about 70 per cent of repair work on protective dykes and other flood-control embankments around Ha Noi have been completed despite the approach of the rainy season.
