Viet Nam: Floods - Oct 2008

Disaster description

According to government information, 85 have been reported dead so far. Up to 20,000 families in the capital city of Hanoi are affected by the floods while 2,000 families in rural areas along the Red River have been moved to safer areas. (IFRC, 4 Nov 2008)

17 provinces suffered losses up to VND 6.316 trillion (over $370.5 million), according to the Central Steering Board for Flood and Storm Control. Outside of Hanoi, Ha Nam and Ninh Binh were hit hardest with total losses for its agricultural production exceeding VND900 billion ($52.94 million) and VND228 billion ($13.4 million) respectively. In Hanoi, nearly 100 out of more than 700 flooded schools remain closed. (Govt. of Viet Nam, 12 Nov 2008))
