"The longstanding belief here is that malaria is transmitted by sharing cups or sleeping next to people suffering from malaria. And people try to treat it by drinking raw camel's milk, so we have a lot to do."

Kediga Gemur, 35, is a trained community health worker living in a remote village called Keda Gesso, 40 km away from Gewane town in north-eastern Ethiopia. She, along with thousands of others, has been badly affected by flooding.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This document summarizes emergency food and non-food requirements in 2009 identified by the multi-agency assessment conducted during November/December 2008. The effects of food insecurity caused by poor performance of seasonal rains, poor crop production coupled with the soaring cereal prices posed several humanitarian challenges to the lives and livelihoods of many in some areas in eastern half of the country. A total of 4.9 million beneficiaries are identified to require emergency assistance in 2009.

ERC MISSION

The United Nations Under-Secretary General and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Sir John Holmes, concluded his three-day mission to Ethiopia on 3rd September. The ERC's key message was that Government and partners have played significant roles in response to the crisis. Nevertheless, humanitarian conditions in the country are of high concern demanding increased donor support and collaboration among all partners.

The ERC met with the Deputy Prime Minister and State Minister of Foreign Affairs and discussed ways to tackle food insecurity.

ERC's MISSION TO ETHIOPIA

In his second mission to Ethiopia since taking post in January 2007, Sir John Holmes will visit Stabilization Centers and Therapeutic Feeding Centers in Konso Special Woreda in SNNPR. The mission will also travel to Jijiga and Kebridehar on 2nd September to meet with the regional government, UN agencies and operational NGOs. The team will also visit CERF-funded project in Lafa'isa that is presently screening 18,000 asylum seekers from Somalia. According to ARRA and UNHCR the asylum seekers are requiring immediate humanitarian assistance.
