DAVAO CITY, Nov. 3 - The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council led by the Office of the Civil Defense XI with their Emergency Operation Center is still in red alert status responding to the urgent needs of affected areas following the recent string of strong earthquakes in Davao Region.

REGIONAL SUMMARY:

During the week, a series of earthquakes in Mindanao have dominated the numbers of affected casualties across the ASEAN region. More than six (6) earthquakes with magnitude 5.0 and above occurred in the Cotabato Province and have displaced thousands. Separately, Tropical Storm MATMO has also caused heavy rainfall in Viet Nam and continuous rains in the Philippines caused flooding in parts of South Cotabato, while another low pressure system in the South China Sea may develop this week.

As families flock to different evacuations centers due to the damage brought by the series of earthquakes and aftershocks, Chairman Richard Gordon reached out to the public to assist in the relief effort through their donations especially for the residents of North Cotabato and Davao Del Sur, two of the badly hit areas.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has stepped up its relief operations for thousands of families affected by the series of earthquakes in North Cotabato through setting up of mobile logistic hubs in Kidapawan City to immediately address needs of affected families and individuals.

Two mobile storage units, one from the United Nations World Food Programme, will be set up today at the provincial grounds of North Cotabato in Amas to speed up the distribution of relief assistance.

Each logistic hub can store up to 1,600 cubic metric tons of goods.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) is reporting seventeen deaths and over 320 injured. Reported numbers are expected to rise as assessment reports from some of the most affected areas are being submitted. Municipality Makilala in the Province of North Cotabato has been particularly hardly hit, with over 103,000 affected people.
