OTTAWA, October 9 2019 –When an earthquake and aftershocks struck the Mirpur district in Azad Kashmir Pakistan on September 24 and 25, Islamic Relief began to respond immediately to the needs of the affected populations.

The impact of the quake damaged houses, roads and sanitation systems across a broad area. Families have been forced to sleep outdoors, and many have been collecting contaminated canal water. Health facilities are inadequate to treat affected populations, and the situation is causing psychological distress.

The low turnout is likely an indication of the deteriorating security situation in the country.

After the 5.6 magnitude earthquake and strong aftershock of 4.7 M in southern Azad Jammu and Kashmir Territory (north-east Pakistan) on 24 September, the number of fatalities has increased.

According to the latest report by Muslim Aid from 30 September, 40 people died and more than 1,600 have been injured. 1,619 houses collapsed and 7,100 have been damaged.

In the afternoon of Tuesday, 24 September 2019, the district of Bhimber, Mirpur and Jhelum in Azad Jammu Kashmir and Punjab, Pakistan, was badly struck by an earthquake of magnitude 5.8 that killed 39 people injuring 746 others. Government reported 454 houses including 135 severely and 319 have been partially damaged.

Below is the key development of the situation during the reporting period by Muslim Aid’s Emergency Response Team.

– Since September 24th earthquake district Mirpur is receiving aftershocks on a daily basis which is increasing the suffering of the affected families. On September 25th second strong jolt was felt in New Mirpur City area with maximum reported urban affectees who were suffering from the traumatic condition. A total of 14 aftershocks have occurred.
