Situation Overview

On 27 July 2019 at 4:16 AM, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted the municipality of Itbayat, Batanes (20.90°N, 121.85°E - 012 km N 04°E) with a tectonic origin and a depth of focus of 12 km. The earthquake was also felt in the neighboring municipalities of Batanes.

I. Status of Affected Families / Persons

A total of 911 families or 2,963 persons were affected by the earthquake incident in 5 barangays in Itbayat, Batanes (see Table 1).

• An earthquake of 5.4 M at a depth of 9 km hit the north of Itbayat Island (Batanes Archipelago, northern Philippines) on 26 July at 22.16 UTC, followed by another one of 6.0 M at a depth of 10 km offshore in the Philippine Sea on 26 July at 23.37 UTC.

• The most affected location is the town of Itbayat, where the majority of island’s population lives.

• The National Disaster Agency has sent medical and rescue teams to the islands, where rescue efforts are currently ongoing.

Three consecutive earthquakes occurred north of Itbayat Island municipality in the province of Batanes last 27 July 2019. A 5.4 magnitude at 4:16am, 5.9 magnitude at 7:37am and 5.8 magnitude at 9:24 am.

The earthquakes caused houses to collapse in the island municipality of Itbayat displacing almost all the 3,000 people living in the island.

• The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) reported a shallow (8-km depth) magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit off the coast of Itbayat town, Batanes province in the northernmost Philippines. This earthquake followed an earlier magnitude 5.4 (15-km depth) earthquake within the same area.

• As high as Intensity VII, equivalent to destructive impact, was reported in the affected towns. To date, more than a hundred aftershocks were reported to follow, with two (2) that are at least magnitude 5.0 (M5.8 and M5.3).

  • As of 05:00 PM, 27 July 2019, a total of 104 aftershocks were recorded. Of which, thirteen (13) were plotted and six (6) were felt, ranging from 2.8 to 5.9 Magnitude and Intensity of I to VII.

Beginning at 23:37 UTC two earthquakes of magnitudes 5.9M and 5.7M struck the Batanes archipelago in the northern part of the Philippines. According to regional authorities and media, at least eight people have been killed and up to 60 injured. Several buildings have been damaged and some have collapsed. The most affected location was the town of Itbayat with a population of 2,800 inhabitants.
