Description of the disaster

On Saturday, 27 July 2019, at 4:16am (local time), the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) reported a series of earthquakes struck the island of Batanes, the northernmost province in the Philippines; the first shock was of 5.4 magnitude with 12 km depth of focus, occurred at 4:16am, followed by the second shock, a 5.9 magnitude with 7 km depth at 7:37am, and the powerful shock was of 5.8 magnitude with 1 km depth tremor was felt after few hours, around 9:24am.

BASCO, Batanes, Aug 1 (PIA)--The entire Batanes province has been placed under a state of calamity after successive earthquakes hit the province on Saturday morning, leading to at least nine deaths and several injured.

Based on the report of the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) region 2, at least 185 houses were totally damaged while 81 were partially damaged due to the series of earthquakes that hit the province.

BASCO, Batanes, August 1 (PIA)--Vice President Maria Leonor Robredo has visited earthquake victims in Itbayat town and personally inspected the damages caused by the series of strong ground shakings last Saturday morning.

Robredo also distributed relief goods and medicines to the affected families, especially those who are still living in tents at the town’s plaza as their houses are still unsafe to occupy.

LAOAG CITY, July 31 (PIA) – During the flag-raising ceremony this Monday, Governor Matthew Marcos Manotoc shared that the provincial government of Ilocos Norte will be sending P500,000 cash assistance for the victims of the twin earthquake that hit Batanes on early Saturday morning.

The cash assistance shall benefit almost 3,000 victims of the recent devastating earthquakes that struck the Itbayat Island of Batanes.

Three successive earthquakes occurred in the remote northern Batanes islands in the morning of 27 July, each followed by earthquakes of smaller magnitudes. According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the three measured 5.4 M, 5.9 M, and 5.8 M.

As of 30 July, nine are reported dead and over 60 injured, nearly 3,000 (the entire population of Itbayat) are displaced and sheltering in tents at the town plaza. Two hospitals in Itbayat sustained major damage and no longer function.

Two (2) moderate-sized earthquakes with Magnitude 5.4 and 5.9 occurred on 2/7 July 2019, 4:16 AM and 7:37 AM respectively, with epicenters located northeast of Itbayat, Batanes at shallow focal depths. These were felt at varying intensities in the province of Batanes. Parameters of these events are summarized below:

As of 30 July 2019, 5:00 PM, a total of 235 aftershocks were recorded. Of which, 46 were plotted and 17 were felt, ranging from 2.2 to 5.9 Magnitude and Intensity of III to VII.

The Philippine Red Cross (PRC) is on the move to help address the immediate needs in Itbayat, Batanes, which experienced successive earthquakes on Saturday.

PRC Chairman Richard Gordon, who led the organization’s response over the weekend, said the organization is focusing on providing psychosocial support, food, water, and temporary shelter for over 2,000 individuals who are displaced in an open ground in front of the municipal hall.

BASCO, Batanes, July 30 (PIA)--The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in Region 2 immediately extended financial assistance, including food and non-food items, to the victims of consecutive earthquakes that jolted Batanes, particularly Itbayat island-town, on Satruday, July 27.

Franco Lopez, DSWD disaster focal person, said they have deployed an augmentation team in the affected areas to conduct rapid assessment on the damages brought about by the magnitudes 5.4 and 5.9 earthquakes happened last Saturday morning.

BASCO, Batanes, July 28 (PIA) -- President Rodrigo Roa-Duterte has personally inspected the damages brought by the two consecutive magnitude 5.4 and 5.9 earthquakes that jolted Itbayat Island town Saturday morning.

The President ordered the immediate release of emergency shelter assistance for the families whose houses were toppled down by the intensity VI and intensity VII quakes.
