Description of the disaster

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) reported that two moderate sized shallow earthquakes with magnitude 5.4 and 5.9 occurred on Saturday, 27 July 2019, at 4:16am and 7:37am respectively. Their epicentres were located on the northeast of Itbayat, Batanes.
In accordance with the PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS) the maximum intensities were VII (destructive) on Itbayat V (Strong) in Basco and IV (moderately Strong) in Sabtang and Ivana.

Dry weather is continue to persist in the Southern ASEAN region particularly Kalimantan (Indonesia) which in alert level 3 for trans boundary haze advisory according to the ASEAN Speciliased Meteorological Centre (ASMC). On the other hand, heavy rainfall persisted in the northern part of the ASEAN region due to the combination of tropical cyclones and enhancement of the Southwest Monsoon.

I. Status of Affected Families / Persons

A total of 1,025 families or 2,982 persons were affected by the earthquake incident in 5 barangays in Itbayat, Batanes (see Table 1).
