UN report says natural disasters to become more destructive in Asia-Pacific without action on disaster resilience

Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and intense and disaster risk is outpacing resilience in Asia-Pacific, the most disaster-prone region in the world, according to the latest report by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

After a major earthquake hit central Philippines on 6 July, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation in Philippines immediately head to the area for humanitarian action for the disaster victims. In Kananga's Lim-Ao, Tzu Chi volunteers found residents' homes destroyed beyond repair, and a school that was just rebuilt in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan also deemed dangerous after the recent quake.

Interior and Local Government Officer-in-Charge Catalino S. Cuy is assuring victims of the 6.5 earthquake that hit Leyte and nearby provinces last July 6 that the government is rallying all its resources for their aid.

Cuy said that around two weeks after the earthquake, various agencies of the government are still on their toes to make certain that all of the immediate needs of the victims are provided for.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) continues to carry out operations to assist the local government of Ormoc City, Leyte in its efforts to secure the safety of residents and minimize their fear of possible aftershocks. The goal of the LGU is to convince residents to leave their communities which are in within the area of the July 6 earthquake fault line.

Last week, around 180 affected families from high ground Barangay Ga-as were transferred to the gymnasium of Barangay Dolores to protect from possible strong aftershocks and possible landslides.

Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi assured on Tuesday that the rehabilitation of power facilities in Region 8 and Bohol damaged by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake last July 6 is continuing and is on schedule.

He said, that the “Build-back Better Principle” is being applied by industry participants to ensure that the facilities will be more “disaster-resilient.”

As of 8 am on Tuesday, the DOE consolidated report stated that Leyte and Samar received 94.5 megawatts (MW) of power.
