On 10 February 2017 at 10:03 PM Philippine Standard Time (PST), a magnitude (M5) 6.7 earthquake struck the Province of Surigao del Norte in northeastern Mindanao. Using the data from the Philippine Seismic Network (PSN) of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology - Department of Science and Technology (PHIVOLCS-DOST), the epicenter was located in Surigao Strait at 9.80° N and 125.35° E or 16 km offshore northwest of Surigao City at a shallow depth of 10 km. The earthquake was generated by the movement of the Philippine Fault - Surigao segment.

Disaster relief and response agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), are continuously monitoring the possible impacts of the new tail-end of a cold front currently battering CARAGA and Davao Region.

According to the issued bulletin of state weather bureau PAGASA, the weather disturbance which was initially observed last February 15, has already weakened but will continue to bring light to moderate rains and thunderstorms in the two regions.

As of 19 February, over 30,700 people remain displaced in northeastern Mindanao (Caraga region) by flooding triggered by a series of weather systems since 8 January. At least 2,100 people are in 18 shelters, while most are staying with relatives and friends. Local authorities and NGOs, with support from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) are providing food and other relief items.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD)- Field Office Caraga reported that as of 3pm today, all 54 barangays in Surigao City that have been affected by the 6.7-magnitude earthquake already received relief assistance.

Likewise, repacking of relief goods at the City Social Welfare and Development Office is on-going to ensure that additional food requirements of survivors will be addressed.

Residents in the city of Surigao were shaken awake from their sleep on Friday, 10 February, after a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck the northernmost province in Mindanao.

The shallow earthquake created strong tremors that caused damage to buildings, infrastructure and disrupted communications lines, affecting some 30,800 people. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council reported that the earthquake killed at least eight people and injured over 200.

Description of the disaster

At 22:00h local time Friday 10 February 2017, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of north-eastern Mindanao, Philippines. According to the Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the earthquake was relatively shallow, with a depth of 10 kilometres, and its epicentre was about 14 kilometres from Surigao City, the capital of Surigao del Norte Province with over 154,000 inhabitants, located about 700 kilometres south of Manila.

BUTUAN CITY, Feb. 15 (PIA) - lnsurance Commissioner Dennis B. Funa has activated Tuesday the Disaster Response Mechanism to expedite quick insurance claims for the speedy recovery of the residents of Surigao.

Last February 10, a magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Surigao City killing at least six and injuring hundreds.

The quake left over 1,400 houses damaged in 54 barangays across Caraga, displacing over 5,170 people. lnitial estimates placed damage at over P140 million.

A team of QRCS's Mission in the Philippines was sent to conduct impact assessment and prepare a humanitarian plan to help the victims of the earthquake.
