China: Earthquake in Gansu Province - Jul 2013
A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit a juncture region of Minxian County and Zhang County in northwest China's Gansu Province on 22 Jul 2013. 94 people were killed and 225,000 people were urgently relocated. (UNCT, 23 Jul 2013)

LANZHOU, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) -- China unveiled Monday a blueprint charting reconstruction in its quake-hit Gansu Province, planning to spend 27.7 billion yuan (4.5 billion U.S. dollars) rebuilding 13 counties in the northwest region.
The reconstruction is scheduled to be completed in three years. Schools and hospitals will be rebuilt by the end of 2014, and residential compounds for relocated people set up by the end of 2015.
China's cabinet has rolled out support policies regarding the reconstruction.

On September 13, Jinde Charities distributed rice and flour to three hundred and ten families in Lulu Village, Meichuan Town, Min County under the coordination of volunteer Tan Ruixia. Each Family got a bag of rice and a bag of flour, worthing forty thousand Yuan in total.

In Syria, heavy fighting continues, with air-strikes on opposition controlled areas in Damascus and on-going offensives in Aleppo, Rural Damascus, Idleb, Homs and Al-Hasakeh. Meanwhile, after three days of talks in Geneva, US Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov reached an agreement on a disarmament proposal under which Syria’s stockpiles of chemical weapons are to be eliminated by mid-2014. The Syrian Minister for Information has indicated that Syria will abide by the terms set out in the plan.
On September 9,2013, Jinde Charities distributed supplies worthy of about seventy thousand Yuan to Fengwangxiang ,Qingshui County, Hongluo Village of Maiji District in Liugou Village, Hongbao Town and Shimen under the help from fathers, sisters and brethren in Tianshui Parish.

Working closely with our local partner in Tianshui Diocese, Jinde Charities has distributed nearly ￥50,000 worth of relief supplies to the families devastated by mudslide in Majiaba village, Niangniangba township, Qinzhou district, Tianshui City, Gansu Province.
On September 6, Jinde Charities and Lanzhou Jinchen Social Service Center distributed rice and flour to 284 families in Yongxing Village, a serious-hit area during the earthquake on July 22 in Minxian. Those supplies were contributed by love people in Beijing, wishing to help people in need through Jinde Charities.

In Syria, intensive fighting continued in Aleppo, Ar-Raqqa, Rural Damascus and Homs. Intensive clashes which ignited at the start of the month between Government and opposition groups in the governorate of Lattakia appeared however to have ceased. At the start of the week, the US warned that a military strike against Syria was imminent, following the alleged use of chemical weapons near Damascus on 21 August. By the end of the week, President Obama indicated that he would seek congressional approval of the Congress before undertaking such an action.
LANZHOU, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- All affected schools in earthquake-hit Minxian County of northwest China's Gansu Province will begin the autumn semester on schedule, said local authorities on Sunday.
As of Sunday, all the 230 affected schools started student enrollment for the new term, which will start on Monday, said the Education Bureau of Minxian County.
On 27th of August, he Hong Kong Government accepted the advice of the Disaster Relief Fund Advisory Committee and approved grants of HK $4.087 million to Amity Foundation for their relief work to flood affected areas in Sichuan and Guangxi that took place in July. Xinhua News agency reported on July 17th that the flood caused 68 dead and 179 people missing. Overall, 13.400 houses have collapsed, 3.47 million people have been affected, and 300.000 flood victims have to be relocated. Furthermore, the heavy rainfall caused landslides and destroyed much of the crop.
On July 22, 2013, an earthquake of 6.6 magnitude took place in Minxian and Zhangxian in Gansu Province, during which Tianshui suffered as well due to the strong tremble. As a result, those old houses in the mountainous area became dangerous housing. Such bad condition was followed by torrential rain which had never been seen in the past 60 years in Tianshui and some other places, which led to landslides and mud-rock flow. As a result, villages and farmlands were destroyed and the transportation was blocked, and more than three hundred thousand people were homeless.Fr.
LANZHOU, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has urged help for residents in quake-hit areas to deal with the upcoming winter while he visited northwest China's Gansu Province.
Li took nine hours to arrive in Meichuan Township, Minxian County on Saturday. Minxian is one of the places struck by the 6.6-magnitude quake on July 22 which killed at least 95 people.
Li said at a meeting in Minxian County that the first priority was to guarantee that residents could keep warm during the the winter, expected to fall very soon in the high, mountainous area.

In Syria, fighting between governmental forces and opposition groups has been concentrated in Aleppo, Deir-ez-Zor, Homs, Lattakia and Rural Damascus this week. Meanwhile, infighting is ongoing within the opposition. As during previous weeks, FSA forces have clashed with Islamist opposition groups on multiple occasions while Kurdish groups continued to fight with Islamist groups in the north of the country. The mass influx of Syrian refugees to neighbouring countries is ongoing. As of 19 August, over 1.9 million Syrians had fled the country.
BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Natural disasters across China claimed 461 lives and left 228 people missing in July, according to official statistics unveiled on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Civil Affairs and the National Commission for Disaster Reduction said in a report that more than 81.58 million people were affected by disasters and 3.33 million people were forced to relocate.

On 22 July 2013, a series of earthquakes shook Dingxi, Gansu Province, northwest China. The first quake of 6.6 on the Richter scale struck at 07:54 China Standard Time (CST). The epicentre was the border of Min and Zhang Counties and at a depth of about 20 kilometres. Over 420 aftershocks have since been felt in the area.
