Myanmar: Earthquake - Mar 2011

An earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale with a depth of 10 km, hit the southern part of Eastern Shan State in Myanmar on 24 March 2011 (IFRC, 24 Nov 2011). Initial findings indicated that at least 18,000 people residing in 90 villages were affected by the earthquake, with most of these located in Tarlay and Mong Lin. As of 11 April, 74 people were reported dead and 125 others injured (OCHA, 11 Apr 2011). On 30 March, CHF 157,540 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Myanmar Red Cross Society as a part of its overall emergency response, which targeted 1,200 families. The DREF operation concluded at the end of August 2011 (IFRC, 24 Nov 2011). Including the DREF operation, OCHA reported that the total amount of contributions and committed pledges for the recovery of the earthquake-affected communities stood at approximately USD 3.2 million as of 11 April (OCHA, 11 Apr 2011).
