Haiti: Earthquakes - Jan 2010
The earthquake that hit Haiti on 12 Jan 2010 affected almost 3.5 million people, including the entire population of 2.8 million people living in the capital, Port-au- Prince. The Government of Haiti estimates that the earthquake killed 222,570 and injured another 300,572 people. Displacement peaked at close to 2.3 million people, including 302,000 children. At least 188,383 houses were badly damaged and 105,000 were destroyed by the earthquake. Sixty per cent of Government and administrative buildings, 80 per cent of schools in Port-au-Prince and 60 per cent of schools in the South and West Departments were destroyed or damaged. Total earthquake-related loss is estimated at $7.8 billion, equivalent to more than 120 per cent of Haiti’s 2009 gross domestic product. (UN General Assembly, 2 Sep 2011)
According to the Humanitarian Action Plan for Haiti 2014 an estimated 172,000 people remained internally displaced in Haiti in 306 camps at the end of 2013, almost four years after the earthquake. Basic services in camps, including WASH and health, had declined faster than the pace of return or relocation of the displaced. 16,377 displaced families living in 52 camps were considered at high risk of forced evictions. Almost 80,000 people lived in 67 camps considered to be at particularly high risk of flooding, with an additional 30 camps at additional environmental risks.
By mid-2014, an estimated 104,000 people remained internally displaced in 172 camps. Almost 70,000 IDPs were not currently targeted by any return or relocation programs. (OCHA, 31 Jul 2014) By Sep, 85,432 people remained internally displaced in 123 camps. (IOM, 8 Oct 2014)

In the few hours following the earthquake in Haiti on 12th January 2010, SOLIDARITÉS INTERNATIONAL took action to overcome the needs for reconstruction. The urban planning project and the economic development in Christ Roi neighbourhood, Port-au-Prince, lasted for four and a half years.
The « Remanbre Kriswa » project, supported by the European Union, improved the living conditions of 20,000 people in the Christ Roi district and provided 66 families with safer and better furnished homes. Our teams secured the Nicolas ravine on more than 500 metres and rebuilt public spaces.
En ce moment, Haiti connait une nouvelle saison cyclonique, les dernières fortes précipitations ont inondés les canaux d’évacuation d’eau et une partie du terrain, laissant, dans le camp Tabarre ISA, des eaux stagnantes qui mélangées aux déchets offrent un environnement idéal à la prolifération de moustiques et aux maladies vectorielles que celles-ci véhiculent. C’est en faisant le suivi régulier de la situation humanitaire des camps, que les équipes CMO de l’OIM ont identifié les risques encourus par ces populations déplacées.
Haiti is experiencing a new hurricane season, and recent heavy rains have flooded low land areas, overfilled the water drainage channels and left stagnant water throughout the camp Tabarre ISA, making it an ideal environment for the spread of mosquitoes and vector-borne diseases. By regularly monitoring the humanitarian situation in the displacement camps, the IOM CMO teams identifies the risks faced by the displaced populations.
Tilory, 18 July 2017 - Many Haitians have been forced to migrate both internally and to neighboring Dominican Republic due to natural disasters such as the 2010 earthquake or severe poverty. This migration often has lead to serious human rights violations, such as the abuse of laborers, sexual and gender-based violence, the abuse of children, and human trafficking. Haitian children are particularly vulnerable, often being trafficked and forced to serve as domestic servants, agricultural workers, or street vendors.

Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region are highly vulnerable to a range of natural hazards, including droughts, earthquakes, forest fires, floods, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions. Between FY 2007 and FY 2016, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/ OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/ FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a diverse range of natural disasters in the region.
UNDP provides support to nearly 170 countries, about 40 of which are affected by crisis and have received rule of law support through the Global Programme for Strengthening the Rule of Law in Crisis-Affected and Fragile Situations.
With support from the American Red Cross, Global Communities with its partner Build Change are implementing the $18.8 million Lavi Miyo Nan Katye pa’m Nan (LAMIKA) program over 37 months. LAMIKA is an urban integrated neighborhood reconstruction and recovery program being implemented in Carrefour-Feuilles, a poor residential neighborhood in Port-au-Prince which sustained extensive damage from the 2010 earthquake.
Food and nutritional insecurity due to recurrent drought episodes exacerbated by El Niño phenomena are the focus of current European Commission assistance. Interventions are closely articulated with initiatives aiming at enhancing the resilience of the most vulnerable populations to face and recover from recurrent shocks.
