Our Haiti Earthquake Response Report

In the 3 ½ years since the devastating January 2010 Haiti earthquake, CWS pushed ahead with programs, projects and initiatives. More than $2 million in material aid was delivered to Haiti. It’s impossible to count the number of lives touched in some small way by our programs and aid, but it is probably well over 500,000.

This report summarizes what CWS did through June 30 of this year in Haiti. It is a "snap-shot" – noting highlights and bright spots in more than three years of work.

When we drove into the CWS-supported Oscar Romero Center in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, I was immediately struck by the contrast. Outside, the city was still broken and bruised by the earthquake of January 12, 2010. Inside the center, the walls were whitewashed and framed by flowers, with inspirational quotations from scripture, Oscar Romero, Mother Teresa, and other peace and justice leaders painted on the walls in blue script.

NEW YORK/PORT AU PRINCE -- The second anniversary of Haiti’s tragic earthquake is first a time to honor those who died and extend compassion to their loved ones, not simply to turn critical eyes to what hasn’t been done, says the head of humanitarian agency Church World Service.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti and New York – When you climb the mountains of northern Haiti and are greeted by the welcoming residents of the “Hand in Hand” food cooperative in Mayombe you are not just in good company. You also are witnessing a successful social experiment – a community becoming self-sufficient in feeding itself.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti -- Media coverage of the first year since the devastating January 12, 2010, earthquake is focused on government inaction, the slow pace of recovery and the seeming inability of Haiti to recover.

But the story has another side: Haitians helping Haitians, say Church World Service staff and CWS partners in anticipation of this week's anniversary.

"One year after the earthquake, the situation in Haiti remains extremely grave and extremely serious.

Port-au-Prince, Haiti - When should humanitarian groups publicly criticize governments and when should they stay quiet?

It is a question that has bedeviled humanitarian groups in recent years (think of Darfur, for example) and it is now being asked in Haiti, and among ACT Alliance members, in the recent commemoration of the six-month anniversary of the January 12 earthquake.

Pushing the question to the forefront was a June 25 op-ed piece in the Los Angeles Times by Erik Johnson, humanitarian response coordinator for ACT member DanChurchAid, based in …

"We are all frustrated by the apparent lack of speedy recovery for Haiti," says Aaron Tate, Haiti earthquake response coordinator for CWS, on this six-month anniversary of the quake on July 12.

"Despite the multiple challenges of implementing programs in the post-earthquake environment, CWS has accomplished much, and continues to work to address unmet needs," Tate adds.

Masséd Dimy, a teacher at école Saint Esprit in the city of Darbonne, was at work on January 12 when the earthquake hit. Together with his students, he managed to run out of the school building before it collapsed. All of them survived.

"I felt very stressed afterwards, but now I'm feeling much better. My only fear is that there will be a new earthquake which is even stronger than the previous one," Mr. Dimy tells us.

Both teachers and students have received psycho-social support to cope with the fears the quake caused.
