A comprehensive atlas of all damage caused in Haiti by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake on 12 January 2010 is now available to help planning recovery and reconstruction measures.

This atlas presents an overview of building damages in Haiti as identified in satellite and aerial imagery recorded after the magnitude 7.0 Haitian earthquake of 12 January 2010. It was produced in support of the Post Disaster Needs Assessment and Recovery Framework (PDNA); and represents a joint analysis by the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT), the European Commission (EC) Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the World Bank.

UNITAR/UNOSAT, EC JRC and the World Bank have coordinated our building damage analyses in support of the Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) in Haiti and produced a joint building damage atlas set for affected cities/places.

Executive Summary

As a result of the earthquake disaster of 12 January 2010, the Haitian government estimates that over 200, 000 people died and about 1 million are in temporary shelter (OCHA Situation Report 21).

These people are most vulnerable to floods associated to heavy rains and cyclones, if they are located in flood-prone areas.
