A year after the devastating January 2010 earthquake many Haitian children have created songs, poems, drawings and theatrical pieces to thank AusAID for supporting their recovery.

AusAID helped support the recovery by funding 24 physically safe areas for children to learn and play in. They were created under Plan International Haiti's $400,000 Australian contribution to the post-earthquake program.

January 12 marks the first anniversary of the massive earthquake that devastated the Caribbean island of Haiti, killing some 250 thousand people and leaving more than one million homeless.

Australia was quick to respond to the disaster, providing $10 million in immediate humanitarian aid and a further $14 million for early recovery and ongoing reconstruction needs.

The Australian public also responded generously to the tragedy, donating $26 million to fundraising appeals launched by Australian NGOs to assist Haiti.

Australia is joining the fight to help Haiti combat one of the most severe outbreaks of cholera seen in the last century.

More than 1,700 people have died from the disease since the Haiti Ministry of Health confirmed an outbreak of cholera on 21 October, with more than 34,000 cases reported.

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said that Australia is helping reduce deaths and sickness and limit the impact of the cholera outbreak by providing $1 million to the United Nations Haiti Cholera Appeal.

Over the last few days it has become clear that the situation in Haiti is dire and as more devastation is discovered outside Port au Prince, the scale of the disaster is increasing.

In response to this and to the United Nation's Flash Appeal launched on the weekend, Australia will provide an additional $5 million to meet urgent and emergency humanitarian needs such as food, water and sanitation, shelter and medical assistance.

Australia will provide an initial $10 million in emergency humanitarian relief and reconstruction assistance in response to the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti close to the capital of Port-au-Prince around 9am (AEST) yesterday, 13 January 2010.

Initial assessments report a large number of casualties and widespread damage with up to five million people adversely affected. The earthquake has brought down buildings including the main hospital.
